Growth

It appears that the garden has hit puberty. Growth abounds in our small attempt to feed ourselves.

tomatos

I planted a bunch of different tomatoes, and foolishly didn’t mark down where I planted each variety, so I’m not sure what this is. My guess is some sort of cherry.

white mold

I noticed a couple tomato plants with this white stuff on them. I’m not sure if they’re bugs or mold, but I’m thinking mold. It’s in the first garden bed on the west side of the plant.

1st blackberry july 2006

All along I’ve been wrong about these berries. I thought they were raspberries but after seeing it turn black today, I realized they were blackberries. I should’ve realized from their shape long ago.

cucumbers

Look at all those flowers! Obviously, the cucumbers are doing very well with many small cukes coming along just fine. You can see the first one on the bottom right of the picture.

peppers

The peppers are finally starting to flower and bloom. I’m betting it’s because it’s begginning to get humid out. Only a couple of the plants have flowered. Like the tomatos, I have a bunch of different varities that I neglected to document so I don’t know if these are bell peppers or hot peppers.

mellons

I’m very pleased the melons have flowered. Thus far, I’ve only seen two but it appears as if there are more buds getting ready to open. I have no idea what kind of melon this is (the package didn’t say) so yet another surprise coming!

bush beans

The bush beans continue to do well. Depending on what’s for dinner tonight, I’m going to be picking a bunch. They are so juicy and fresh, full of flavor and life. When I eat one I can feel its magic working through my body. They are, however, a little fuzzy. And we know how I feel about fuzzy food.

pink mold

Some pinkish mold has taken residence on the soil between the pumpkins and eggplants.

Just in case the house gets sold, Gene and Gayle invited me to blueberry pick. I’m going back tomorrow.

On todays episode of As the Garden Grows we see tomato has managed to flower and fruit. Will tomato’s siblings be able to do the same?

Raspberries are continuing to ripen, their small breasts heaving into the camera.

Pumpkin has flowered and is getting ready to produce a small vegetable.

But will no one notice potatos misfortune and lack of flowers?

Against incredible odds, eggplant has produced a flower. Will the wee plant make it to maturity?

Tomatoes, Carrots, Cucumbers, Oh My

The garden is really starting to flower up now. The cucumbers have produced vegetables and flowers enough for a wonderful salad and hopefully some pickles as have the bush beans. The pumpkins have flowered as have the tomatoes. The peppers are still small and now doing too much, nor are the eggplants; one of my sage plants bit the bullet but otherwise the herbs are doing well.

It’s going to be a wonderful harvest.

Is it Time to Eat Yet?

Before we get started I have to say this: this version of WordPress sucks. This is now the third time I’m reposting because WP keeps adding commands that I’m not adding, thus, screwing up the post. It’s beyond frustrating.

We had a fierce thunderstorm come through yesterday and, although we needed the rain, it came down so hard it flattened some of the plants.

IMGP1643
You can see in the upper left corner of the picture where the carrots seemed to have escaped flattening. Or they perked back up. I hope the same for those flattened.

The potatoes are slouching since the rain. I do hope they perk back up, or at the very least, flower in their present state.

IMGP1649

Next year we plan on planting more varieties of potatoes, including sweet and yukon gold

The only not-so-fantastic garden news is the eggplant. No flowers have been seen, and as you can tell, something is getting a belly full.

IMGP1648

Save some for us!

The pumpkins are getting ready to flower. I accidently grabbed pumpkin plants when I was at the plant store. These were sitting next to the acorn squash which is what I wanted to plant.
IMGP1647

At least now I’ll have gourd like pumpkins at Samhain

The tomatos are also coming along. Of the thirty or so plants in the ground, I hope more than two flower and produce fruit.
IMGP1642

There’s a couple different varieties in the ground but I don’t know which this one is. I love these kind of surprises!

The marigolds I planted from seed in and around the tomatoes. Papa told me the reason to do is is to keep bugs off the tomatoes (maybe I should plant some near the eggplant next year…) Tomatoes and marigolds always remind my of Papa.
IMGP1646

I love the bright colors of marigolds.

The bush beans are doing very well. There are small white flowers all over the plants. They too got a little flattened during the rain storm, but they seem to be no worse off.

IMGP1641

Note to self: bush beans take over. Give them their own bed next year

The herbs are all doing pretty well. This is basil I started from seed (ignore the weed to the left). You can see little baby basils coming up next to this one.

IMGP1650

Just behind it you can see cilantro and curley parsley.

What’s doing the best, though, is the cucumbers. Cucumbers are another item that remind me of Papa. Every year he would grow beautiful cucumbers and tomatos, eggplants too but we never ate any ‘cuz we’re not eggplant people. Wolf is though, which is why I planted some.

IMGP1644

I planted two different varieties of cucumber and I’m not sure which one this is. Hopefully it’s the pickling one. But that means I need to learn to pickle, can, and jar.

Now for this weeks mystery. I find these all over the yard, mostly by the oak tree.

IMGP1640

Is it an egg?

Here’s one of the little guys in it’s natural habitat.

The mushroom underneath makes it look like it’s sitting on a plate. I went out earlier and couldn’t find anywhere near as many as last time.

Check out the soon-to-be raspberries!
