4th Bed

Wolf made a fourth garden bed today in which I put three rows of beans. I don’t know whether the first row is bush or pole; the second and third row are Roman pole beans. Next to the pole beans is one row of pumpkins, then one row of spegetti squash.

We still don’t have any room for tomatoes or peppers, which is fine because none of the seeds made it (except the Napoli which I posted about earlier today). I may buy already started tomato and peppers plants, but I don’t know where I’ll put them.

NEXT YEAR I MUST PLAN BETTER!

Coming Up Nicely

In the first garden bed, closest to the house I have potatoes, cabbage, and spinach planted. The spinach is not doing fab, an entire row doesn’t seem to be growing, but the potatoes and cabbage are doing fine.

In the second garden bed, next to the first, I have one row of Napoli tomotoes which seem to be doing fine. Then there’s a big open space and next is peas (doing so-so) and then turnips which seem to be doing ok.

The third bed has carrots (not doing anything) and zucchini and squash planted. They all seem to be doing fine.

In one wooden pot I have catnip which is growing very slowly. In one bucket have onions which seem to be fine and the other bucket is some more turnips, which are doing fine. Then I have chives in a pot.

There are sunflowers which need to be planted, but I need soil to do so. I also have a bunch of different beans which desire a garden, not seed pods, but I need another bed. I think Wolf is out there working on it now. Hopefully.

The cukes are planted next to the tomatoes and in the wooden bucket which was meant for basil. I’ll probably have to move those plants, but they can stay there for the time being.

I need a 10 acre yard with lots of sun.

Strawberry Moon

The strawberries have bloomed into pretty white flowers all over the yard. The Strawberry Moon is afoot!

In other growing news, the potatoes are coming up just fine as are the turnips, cabbage, garlic, zucchini and squash, and chives. The beans are also doing well and so are the sunflowers. I have to get the beans and sunflowers into the ground.

I planted some more tomato and cucumber seeds the other day so lets hope they take. Even still, we’re going to have to buy some already started plants.

Sigh.

Drying Out

It rained for the last five days, rain we really needed, but now it’s starting to dry out. Sun has returned from his vacation to warm us up and dry us out.

I got the potatoes and spinach in the ground a couple weeks ago. On Thursday I got the cabbage, more spinach, carrots, zucchini, summer squash, peas, turnips into the ground and I planted some catnip seed, and a couple more cloves of garlic. I still have two different types of beans to plant and some pumpkins, but Wolf needs to build me a new garden bed. I’m going to have to buy peppers and tomatoes already started because the seeds I sprouted just didn’t make it. Will I never be able to grow tomatoes and peppers?

Also on Thursday I planted some of the flowers. Around one tree is the morning glories and some forget-me-nots and around the other tree is the love in a puff and something else, I forget. I deliberately kept the two viney plants on different trees.

Byron’s Septic came and pumped us out this morning so there’s a lovely shit smell hanging over the yard. It had been 2.5 years and it was needed so I’m not complaining (a lot).

Rain

The last week or two have been beautiful: bright blue skies and yellow sun. But it’s been very very dry. That is, until Tuesday night when the rains finally came. It poured all day yesterday and it appears it may do so today and probably tomorrow.

I have seen definitive growth in the garden: the spinach is coming up and so are the potatoes. The garlic is doing good, and so are the onions (doing so well I have to thin them). The peat pots are doing so-so. What has come up is doing well (zucchini, summer squash, spegitti squash, pumpkins, a couple different beans) but the eggplant, tomatoes, cukes, and a couple other things are not doing well. I may have to buy them already started.

We have learned one lesson: no more peat pots. They are too difficult to keep moist. Someone suggested putting plastic wrap over the pots to keep the moisture in, but Wolf didn’t want to do that. And after he explained his reason, neither do it.

His reason: it’s not “organic” to plant seeds into plastic. I mean, aren’t we trying to reduce the amount of plastic we use? And who wants those chemicals in our food? While we still have much change to make (the starter seeds are in plastic or peat pots) we will try to prepare for next spring by stocking up on clay pots.

Another lesson I learned this year is don’t sprout the seeds then plant them. I say this because I never seem to have the time during the late winter/early spring to plant the seedlings as soon as they should be. Instead, they end up lingering, and I feel guilty, and then don’t do well when we plant them into seedling pots. So next year I’m going to put one seed in each pot in the winter. We just need a small green house outside so we can protect the plants from cats.

Ok, I have to go make the garden map so I can put the plants in the ground today while it’s moist, it’s not raining, and the moon is new.

I finished my last final today, which means I have time to get into the garden tomorrow (it’s pouring out today) and plant what needs to be planted. Some stuff is doing great, and others aren’t doing anything.

Pictures someday.

It’s raining. I don’t know how long it’s supposed to last, but it’s needed so I welcome it.

The spinach needs some cool wet days to grow. Everything else seems to be doing fine. We well plant the seedlings into the ground on Thursday, the day after the new moon.
