Garden Update
So last weeks rain really help the garden explode.
Here you can see the three sisters planting method I discussed here here, and here (the last link will show you the change in the garlic, along with this post).
In the center of the circle is corn. We originally planted rainbow corn but Francesca ate it as it was coming up and we couldn’t get anymore rainbow corn so we planted regular corn (whatever “regular” means). As you can see it’s starting to come up though we need more corn to have the three sisters method work out better so I put some more seed in yesterday (rainbow corn this time).
The middle ring is pole beans, I think black turtle. I also had to put some more bean in the ground a week or two ago because not all of it was coming up so I’m pleased the beans seem to be doing so well.
The most outer ring is squash. On the left hand side is red kuri squash and zucchini and on the right is summer squash and zucchini. The zucchini I planted yesterday because not enough was coming up.
Honestly, I’m a little concerned about this planting method because I don’t think there’s enough room in the bed for the plants but there’s only one way to find out!
This bed has Connecticut Field Pumpkin and Blue Hubbard Squash. As you can see, the bed is outside the fence. We did this because there isn’t enough fencing to surround all the garden beds. While we care if the pumpkin and squash don’t come up, or more realistically if the chickens devour the bed/plants, we are growing these two for fun not for food (though they will be food if they survive).
The cucumbers are doing well though the melons don’t seem to be doing anything (I really, really hope we get some melons!) We planted a couple different types of cukes I think so hopefully the bed will fill in some.
The potatoes are doing *awesome.* We’re going to have to start hilling soon. We’ve decided to just cut more logs to add more layers of soil onto the plants. Hilling is kinda a pain in the butt so we’re hoping this way will work out better.
In the background is basil with catnip (on the left) and black turtle beans on the right. The catnip has a fence around it to keep Harley from devouring it. Poor kitty has an addiction!
This bed is kinda the “catch all” bed. In the front there are two eggplants which I picked up at Agway yesterday. In the middle by the side is a single onion I pulled from the compost, and in the back is some winter squash. I also stuck some zucchini seed in there yesterday because it’s supposed to be a zucchini bed.
The little bed is the “mystery bean bed.” I didn’t plant beans there this year, they just came up on their own. There’s supposed to be oregano in that bed but it’s in the small black bucket next to it. The small silver bucket has chives and the big silver bucket has carrots. All are doing quite well.
Here we have garlic and tomatoes. The tomatoes were from Agway which is why they are so much bigger than the other tomatoes I planted from seed. The clay pot has dill in it which is exploding. The wooden bucket is catnip which I grow more for me than for the cats. It’s a good bug repellent and antiseptic, plus it’s good to put you to sleep when you’re a little insomniactic.

I had an Irish woman explain potato growing to me once, but it went totally over my head. Best of luck with those!
Potato growing: cut potatoes into small chunks to include at least one eye. Plant. Watch grow.
I love your beds! Those are great!
Thanks Allie! Wolf built them with wood from the woods around us.
