5.8 Percent
July 9, 2008
Project Laundry List made the news in Maryland.
After the refrigerator, the dryer is often the second largest electricity user in a household. And, Lee pointed out, with newer, energy-efficient refrigerators coming out, in some households, clothes dryers will become the largest electricity user.
“It varies from region to region, but electric dryer use amounts to 5.8 percent of residential electricity use overall,” Lee said. “For homes that don’t have electric heat, it’s obviously a much higher percentage.”
I don’t get why “Americans” are so bothered with outside lines. Are they really so petty and vain they can’t stand to see another’s laundry hanging out?
In the rural community I live in, I’ve never heard anyone complain about outdoor lines. It would seem the majority of community members have an outdoor line.
I snapped this picture while on a training drill with the fire department last week. This is the kind of line I’ve asked Wolf to build me so I can save some space here in the yard, not to mention the trees I have the line tied to will be coming down.

Hi! I got your request for a pic from the website. First, Aden broke the line!! Then, I took some great pics and they were magically deleted from the camera! (I suspect my son, who cannot resist buttons!) So, I promise, I’ll get a post up soon! :)
Farm Mom: I have to laugh out loud when I read your comment.

We have one of these whilygig ones at the Farm. As long as my “unmentionables” are away from the road - who cares? I love the smell of line dried clothes!
Silverwolf: I hang the unmentionables, which includes my menstrual pads, but then you can’t see my house from the street. Not that I’d care, though!
Speaking of menstrual pads… I thought you might be interested in this:

It is more or less a reusable rubber cup. I have a girlfriend that uses one and she absolutely loves it. I haven’t tried it yet myself, but it is certainly worth looking into. It looksl ike it would take a little getting used to in order to use though!
I’ve seen them before but ruled them out for two reasons. The first is because most keepers are made out of latex which I’m allergic to. The second reason is because those which aren’t made out of latex are made out of silicone and I’m not putting silicone in my vagina. If keepers were made from bladders of animals I’d give one a try but I refuse to use one made from synthetic chemicals.
